Patna : The central government has sought a report on the cases pending against Bihar legislator Anant Singh, official sources said here Monday. He faces over two dozen criminal charges.
The state home department has asked the Inspector General of Police (Patna Zone) Rajvardhan Shama to furnish details of Singh’s alleged criminal activities and the status of criminal cases pending against him as the central government has sought a report on him, sources in the state police headquarters said. Singh is a legislator of the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).
“The central government has sought a report after it received several complaints against him and the state government’s apathy in checking and controlling his activities,” the sources said.
They added that the central government possessed a CD showing Singh and his men dancing with an AK-47 rifle. Though this photo was shown on a couple of private TV channels, the state government took no action against him.
In 2004, Singh was seen brandishing an AK-47 rifle in public and despite a complaint in court no punitive action was taken. Under law, only security personnel are allowed to carry the assault rifle.
Last November, Singh and four of his aides were arrested for attacking journalists. They were later released on bail. He was also named as an accused in the murder of his relative Sanjay Singh last month.
Singh, known as ‘Chote Sarkar’ for his muscle and money power, is considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
