Four NCP nominees support Congress in Tripura, party incensed

Agartala : The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Tuesday accused the main opposition Congress party in Tripura of forcing four of their nominees to back out from fighting the Feb 23 elections.

“In a most unethical manner the Congress party has snatched away four NCP nominees and asked them to extend their support to the Congress,” NCP Tripura state president Nirmalya Dasgupta said in a complaint to the chief election commissioner (CEC).

The NCP, a partner of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the centre and in Maharastra, has put up five candidates for the Feb 23 election to the 60-member state legislature.

The four NCP candidates had announced their decision to withdraw from the electoral race in a press conference at the Congress headquarters Monday.

However, the scheduled withdrawal of candidature was over on Feb 9.

“Kindly take appropriate legal action both against the Congress party and the four candidates,” said Dasgupta in his letter to the CEC.

Congress denied the charge and said the four NCP candidates had withdrawn from the race and decided to support the Congress on their own.
