Washington : US President George W. Bush Monday backed Kosovo’s declaration of independence as Russia was calling for the UN to void Kosovo’s move and European Union members were divided over whether to recognize the former Serbian province.
“The Kosovars are now independent. It’s something that I have advocated, along with my government,” Bush said in an interview with NBC during a visit to Tanzania.
Bush did not say whether the US would officially recognize Kosovo.
“We’ll watch and see how the events unfold today,” he said.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia Sunday. Russia has called on the UN to declare Kosovo’s independence illegal.
Bush said that UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s plan for a break from Serbia, to be supervised by the European Union, remained the “blueprint forward” in the process.
