EU calls for the reopening of crossings in Gaza

By NNN-KUNA

Vienna : The European Union has called for the reopening of crossings in the Gaza Strip to secure the delivery of goods and services to the Gazans.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Demetry Ruppel said that the issue was a priority for the EU. Slovenia chairs the EU’s semi-annual rotation.

The EU is planning to resurrect its mission at the Rafah Crossing, he said in a press release.

Ruppel said that Israel also has an obligation to provide circumstances to ease traffic within the Strip.

The Palestinian side is also demanded to stop the vicious cycle of violence, the EU official noted.

The EU is keen to witness strong security Palestinian institutions that are able to perform its duties in the area, he said, adding that Tel Aviv should also halt the building of settlements, a matter, according to Ruppel, that might cause “distrust” in the whole political process.

As for the situation in Lebanon, Ruppel said that the EU is strongly for the Arab League initiative regarding the presidential quandary in the war-striven country.

Lebanon’s 14 political factions have failed to agree on a consensus presidential candidate and a change in the electoral law that also requires a compromise on a national unity government.
