German MEP urges end of all US and European sanctions against Cuba

By IRNA

Berlin : A senior German Social Democratic lawmaker called for removing all US and European sanctions against Cuba, less than a day after Cuba’s revolutionary leader Fidel Castro stepped down from all his official posts.

Talking with Wednesday’s issue of the Passauer Neuen Presse newspaper, Martin Schulz said, “The sanctions are of no use. They should be lifted.”
Most EU states share this position because these sanctions are not being complied with economically after all, he added.

The chairman of the Social Democratic faction in the European Parliament stressed also that US sanctions against Cuba were “purely motivated ideologically.”
The 81-year-old Castro had led Cuba since 1959 but Tuesday said he would step down as president after a long illness, official Cuban media reports said.
