Spain on Maximum Alert Before Elections

Madrid : The Spanish government declared a maximum terror alert Thursday, two weeks ahead of the March 9 general elections.

According to Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, maximum alert means total mobilization of security forces to patrol shopping areas, transport hubs, power stations and and communications sites, sporting events and landmark buildings.

The maximum alert status also covers protection of everything related to the elections, particularly campaign events and the headquarters of the political parties.

The minister pointed out the decision is meant to guarantee the security of Spanish citizens during the electoral process, which officially starts Saturday.
