North retain Duleep Trophy title

Mumbai : Shikhar Dhawan scored an unbeaten 94 as North Zone beat West by six wickets to lift their second successive Duleep Trophy title here Friday.

North needed just one session to knock off 92 runs on the fourth and final day, and coasted to their 17th title triumph.

Set 166 for a victory, North started proceedings at 74 for three but lost only one more wicket before romping home with opener Dhawan remaining unbeaten on 94.

Dhawan, who was on overnight 44, applied himself and played a patient knock, while Yashpal Singh (15) Friday played 39 deliveries but failed to add to his to his overnight score.

Rajat Bhatia (33 not out) and Dhawan put on 53 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket partnership to see North through to a comfortable victory.

Dhawan struck 13 fours and a six in his 160-ball stay, while Rajat’s 68 ball knock was studded with five boundaries.

Ashraf Makda was the only successful bowler for West Friday when got the wicket of Yashpal.

The champions received Rs 30 lakh and the runners-up Rs 15 lakh.
