New Delhi: The Supreme Court on 22nd February came down heavily on Raj Thackeray of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for the recent violent campaigns against north Indians in Maharashtra.

Expressing its strong displeasure over Raj’s statements that triggered violence across the state, the apex court rejected ‘sons of the soil’ theory of Raj and Shiv Sena. The court said it would not allow anyone to balkanize India. “We know what is happening there. This is a united country and we will never accept the theory of ‘Dharti ke Lal’ (sons of soil),” the bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said. The Supreme Court warned Raj Thackeray in clear terms that any attempt to divide the country would not be tolerated.

The Supreme Court, however, refused to entertain petition seeking action against Raj and MNS. The bench suggested the petitioners to approach Mumbai High Court as the case related to law and order. The court also rejected Raj’s appeal against the ban on his meetings, processions and press conferences imposed by the Mumbai police.
