Mumbai to host international communications meet

Mumbai : The sixth international conference on communications convergence here next month will focus on wireless communication in today’s age and how the telecom revolution could be taken to the remote rural areas.

“Leaders from the telecom industry and business will participate as speakers and will deliberate upon various policy matters and future directions of wireless communication,” Niraj Bajaj, president of the Indian Merchant’s Chamber (IMC), told IANS. The IMC is organising the March 6-7 event.

Minister for Communications and IT A. Raja will inaugurate the conference accompanied by Jayantrao Patil, Maharashtra’s minister for finance and planning.

Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar will also be present in the conference along with Suresh Prabhu, MP and former minister of power.

The conference would discuss a wide range of issues including the past, present and future of mobile phones and broadband, fixed-mobile convergence and future of broadband applications.

The members would speak on how the telecom revolution would empower the Indian economy and the role of new technologies in shaping the markets. The conference would mainly focus on how telecom revolution could be taken to the remote rural areas by use of wireless technology.

Other guests include Jignesh Shah, founder CEO of Financial Technologies Group, Venugopal N. Dhoot, chairman and managing director Videocon Industries Ltd and Kuldeep Goyal, chairman and managing director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

The conference will be attended by F.C. Kohli, former deputy chairman Tata Consultancy Services, Deepak Chhabria, managing director of Finolex Cables Ltd, Ashank Desai, chairman of Mastek Ltd, Sumit Chowdhury, chief information officer of Reliance Communications Ltd and Subir Raha, executive vice-chairman of the Hinduja Group.

The conference will also be attended by Nanik Rupani, chairman of electronics and telecommunications committee (ETC) of the IMC, Vijay Mukhi, chairman of the IT cell at IMC, Ashok Mansukhani, IMC ETC member and president of corporate affairs at Hinduja Ventures Ltd, and Peeyush Agrawal of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL).
