Changsha (China): China will go all out this year to check ever worsening damage to offshore ecology caused by the discharge of land-borne pollutants, director of China’s State Oceanic Administration (SOA) has said.
Sun Zhihui made the pledge while addressing an ongoing annual conference in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province.
He promised that his organisation would tighten monitoring of the ecology of China’s offshore waters and make efforts to restore marine ecology by establishing seven special protective zones, including two marine nature reserves this year.
SOA would also be stricter in approving new projects if they fall short of standards in environmental protection and energy efficiency. In the past, the rules have been waived on some such projects.
The oceanic administration also plans to carry out other ecological projects such as mangrove development, developing sea grass patches and seaside wetlands at coastal sections.
