Four, including a serving general killed in Pindi blast

Rawalpindi : Surgeon General of Army Medical Corps Lieutenant General Mushtaq Ahmed Baig was killed in a suspected suicide blast on Monday, officials said. General Mushtaq’s driver and guard were among the four dead along with over a dozen wounded in the blast, police and interior ministry officials said.

The military vehicle was targeted by a suspected suicide bomber on the busy Mall Road, near Nadra’s office, witnesses said.

Security officials immediately cordoned off the site of the blast and shifted the injured to Rawalpindi General Hospital and the nearby Military Hospital.

Witnesses said several vehicles were also damaged in the blast.

The explosion occurred near the GPO chowk, on the Mall Road and is close to the Military Hospital.

A graduate of King Edwards Medical College, Lahore, Lt. Gen.

Mushtaq Ahmad Baig joined Army Medical Corp in January 1976. He was promoted as Lieutenant General and appointed Surgeon General Pakistan Army and Director General Medical Services (Inter Services) on Feb 8, 2007.

He was an Ophthalmologist. He has many publications to his credit and attended many national and international workshops on Ophthalmology.

Presently he was serving as Principal Army Medical College, Rawalpindi.

He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), in recognition of his meritorious services.
