Hobart : Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar Tuesday lauded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for spreading the game to every nook and corner of the country.
Gavsakar, commentating for Star Sports during the ongoing one-day series between India, Sri Lanka and Australia, said that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has done a great job in nurturing talent.
“Today we have lot of cricketers in the team who are from non-cricketing centres like Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala,” he said, after India defeated Sri Lanka here and moved into the finals of the Commonwealth Bank triangular series Tuesday.
Gavsakar was elated at the fact that small town boys like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, S. Sreesanth and Parveen Kumar have done well in the Indian team. He also appreciated the good work done by the now defunct Talent Research Development Wing, which was headed by former captain Dilip Vengsarkar.
The legendary batsman said that the Australian cricket board has failed to attract talent from less-known cities.
“Look at the Australian Cricket Academy. How many cricketers from less-known places have they produced in recent times? Why don’t they have cricketers from places like Darwin, Cairns or Kalgoorlie?”
