Sydney : The allegedly “illegal” gloves India skipper wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni wore during the 10th match of the Commonwealth Bank Series against Australia were legal, the India manufacturers of the gloves claimed Wednesday.
Dhoni managed to escape a penalty after he promised match referee Jeff Crowe that he would not use the wicket-keeping gloves that breached International Cricket Council (ICC) specifications.
Dhoni took a spectacular one-handed catch of Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist in the Australian innings. Concerns about the gloves were then raised on air by Channel Nine commentators, former Australia stumper Ian Healy and former captain Ian Chappell.
The ball lodged inside the gloves’ webbing between the thumb and index finger.
But India’s Sunrising Sportings Goods hit back. “The same gloves are also being used [under the brand name Puma] by wicketkeeper Gilchrist. Then why are those gloves not termed illegal?” company director Virendra Sareen was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
