Paris : French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner has warmly welcomed an agreement that is aimed at ending the fighting between warring factions in Kenya and he has welcomed “the wisdom of each of the parties.” In a statement issued late Thursday, Kouchner, who is travelling in Chad, praised the agreement between President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga, who contested the results of a general election claimed by Kibaki several weeks ago.
The ensuing violence led to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people who were chased from their homes on ethnic grounds.
“Kenya must continue to work for the reconciliation of all its components,” Kouchner said.
The French Minister also praised the role of the African Union and that of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in fostering the accord that allows for the emergence of a power-sharing system.
France, and the European Union, will continue in its efforts to accompany Kenya on the road to prosperity and peace, Kouchner noted.
