Kabul : Taliban militants blew up a telecommunications tower in southern Afghanistan after a three-day deadline to stop all night telephone signals expired Friday.
Taliban militants had warned Monday to attack mobile phone offices and their property if the companies failed to halt phone signals overnight from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The militants accused the US and NATO forces of tracking down Taliban militants using their mobile signals and then launching attacks on their hideouts.
The militants destroyed a mobile phone antenna in the Zherai district of southern Kandahar province Friday morning, said Neyaz Mohammad Sarhadi, the district administrative chief.
“Today morning the enemies of Afghan people destroyed an Areeba antenna in a remote area in the district,” Sarhadi said, adding that thousands of people would be affected by the sabotage.
Areeba is one of the four companies that provide coverage in almost all corners of Afghanistan. The companies are the most profitable foreign investors since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.
