Surrendered militants in paramilitary forces to be screened

By IANS

Jammu : Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir would “discreetly” screen surrendered militants who have joined security forces, officials here said.

The exercise follows the arrest of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper, Javed Ahmad, in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh for his alleged strange behaviour following the terror assault on a CRPF camp on Jan 1 in which eight people were killed.

Javed was a surrendered militant who was recruited into the CRPF in 2002, according to official sources here.

“With this case, a need has arisen for a fresh look at the antecedents and behaviour of such men in uniform,” a senior official told IANS.

“A discreet screening would be conducted to find out who have fallen prey to threats or lures by militant outfits and those who have kept themselves immune from this malaise,” the official said.

About a year ago, two soldiers were caught for having lent their mobile phone SIM cards to militants.

The process of recruiting surrendered militants into the Border Security Force and CRPF had started in the late 1990s, when the central government devised a policy to rehabilitate them and also use them in counter-insurgency operations.
