US official visiting India to meet food, drug exporters

New Delhi : US Health Secretary Mike Leavitt arrives in India Sunday on a six-day visit during which he will interact with businessmen exporting food and medicines to his country.

Leavitt’s first halt will be Chennai, where he will meet Indian Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

He will also attend a round table on Indo-US healthcare collaboration Jan 7 in Chennai.

US diplomats said his meeting with Indian exporters is aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of Indian food, drugs and medical products.

Leavitt will then travel to Hyderabad and Cochin, from where food and medicine is exported to the US.

In New Delhi, Leavitt will meet students of Jamia Millia Islamia University and visit healthcare facilities in Sriniwaspuri area in south Delhi to see how polio vaccines are provided and HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis patients are treated.

He will meet government officials and business leaders. Leavitt chairs President George W. Bush’s cabinet-level Import Safety Working Group.

This will be Leavitt’s fourth trip to Asia as the US health secretary.
