Bhopal : Dilip Shyam, a painter who popularised the Gondi form of tribal art, has been honoured with the first Madhya Pradesh Jangarh award for 2007.
Titled ‘Jangarh Ankh’, Shyam’s official entry was selected from among the works of 17 artists and 13 sculptors. The award has been instituted in the name of late folk artist, sculptor and singer Jangarh Singh Syam.
Instituted by Bhopal-based organisation Vanya, with the state’s Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah as chairman, the award carries a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and a citation.
The jury comprised journalist Abhilash Khandekar, artist Harchandan Singh Bhatti and art critic and dance exponent Ashok Tiwari.
The award would be conferred on Shyam during the three-day International Tribal Film Festival to be held in Indore from Feb 1.
Born in Patangarh village of Dindori district, Shyam has already exhibited his paintings at Amarkantak, Bhopal, Mumbai, Patiala, Delhi and Khajuraho. His work will be exhibited at Indore during the tribal film festival.
