Ranchi : A mother of two girls was burnt to death by her husband and in-laws when she delivered a third girl child in Jamshedpur town of Jharkhand.
According to local media reports Sunday, Namita Ghosh, a resident of Nekradih village in Jamshedpur, was burnt to death Friday night.
Namita’s husband Pintu Ghosh allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. Namita reportedly died on the spot.
Pintu and his family members told neighbours that she had committed suicide as she was unhappy over giving birth to another girl child.
Suspecting foul play, some villagers informed police about the incident. Pintu was arrested when he was about to light the funeral pyre of the already charred body of his wife. The dead body has been sent for post mortem.
“We have not killed Namita. She committed suicide by burning herself,” Pintu was quoted as saying.
But Namita’s father accused Pintu of murdering his daughter. “My daughter was torched for two reasons, first for dowry and second for delivering girls consecutively,” he was quoted as saying.
“My daughter’s life became difficult when she delivered the first daughter. Her husband and in-laws started torturing her demanding more money and for not delivering a boy,” he said.
