Paris : French President Nicolas Sarkozy Tuesday refused to say whether or not he and singer and former supermodel Carla Bruni would marry, but said the relationship was for real.
“It is serious,” Sarkozy told some 600 journalists in Paris when asked about his plans, after the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche reported Sunday that he and the 39-year-old Bruni would marry in February.
Regarding a possible wedding, the French president said, “The chances are good that you will hear about it when it has happened.”
Sarkozy also defended himself against charges that he was flaunting his private life at the expense of the business of governing.
“Carla and I did not want to lie,” he said about the recent spate of well-illustrated media reports showing Sarkozy and the former girlfriend of Mick Jagger, Donald Trump and Eric Clapton in Disneyland, Egypt and Jordan.
Sarkozy said that as president he had the right to be just as happy as any other person.
“In 2007, I divorced,” he said. “It was not exactly the happiest time in my life.”
