Agartala : Angry villagers Tuesday torched several houses in Tripura’s Kalyanpur area after security forces killed a local youth mistaking him for a militant.
“An 18-year-old tribal boy was shot dead in firing by security forces who mistook him to be a militant. There was a counter-insurgency operation going on in the area when this incident took place,” said police spokesperson Nepal Das.
The incident took place at Kalyanpur, 52 km west of here. “The security personnel came under fire from unidentified militants and they retaliated, leading to this incident,” Das added.
Locals then went on a rampage setting ablaze several houses, all belonging to the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders and supporters.
