Shimla : Heavy snowfall in the highest reaches of Himachal Pradesh has brought life to standstill in many areas, with the cold wave further tightening its grip.

Rekong Peo, headquarters of the tribal district of Kinnaur, has received 105 cm of snowfall in the last 36 hours, officials said here.

Officials say this is the heaviest snowfall in Rekong Peo in the last 16 years. The place is situated some 250 km from here.

Around 200 people, mostly labourers, are trapped in Kinnaur district after an avalanche washed away a stretch of the road near Sangla town, about 240 km from here.

The Hindustan-Tibet Road is blocked for vehicular traffic beyond Shimla due to heavy snowfall at Kufri and Narkanda.

The ski resort of Narkanda, about 60 km from here, has recorded around 60 cm of snowfall. It has also snowed in the tourist resorts of Manali and Dalhousie. But there has been no snowfall in Shimla.

The entire state is experiencing power cuts since the past few days due to shortage of power from the northern grid, adding to the woes of the people.
