New Delhi : Heavy snowfall continued in North Kashmir killing at least two due to avalanches, while the northern plains experienced a drop in both day and night temperatures, met office said here Wednesday.

“Active westerly disturbances over Jammu and Kashmir are likely to cause heavy snow and rains in the coming 48 hours (starting Wednesday evening). We have written to all the district administrations to keep their manpower and machinery ready to face any eventuality,” Amir Ali, project coordinator, disaster management Kashmir, said in Srinagar.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir said the north Kashmir mountain resort of Gulmarg received over four feet of snow in the past three days, and it was heavily snowing in Kupwara Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy snow and rains have led to closure of the strategic Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

Rain and thundershowers are likely at a few places in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh during next 24 hours and mainly dry weather thereafter.

The met office forecasts fall in temperature in the northern plains after Jan 11.
