The Egyptian diplomat will discuss with them a three-stage plan aimed at the Lebanese crisis settlement that was approved on Sunday, January 7, at an urgent meeting of the LAS foreign ministers in Cairo.

The LAS initiative opens the way towards the earliest election of Lebanese Army Commander General Michel Suleiman to the post of the president and envisages the formation of a national unity government on a balanced foundation.

Factions of the ruling coalition and opposition alliance on the whole welcomed the Lebanese “road map.” Parliament speaker Nabih Berri assessed the plan of Moussa as “an important and responsible step in support of civil peace and accord in Lebanon.” Positive signals have also come from Syria and Iran.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad urged the Lebanese “to display wisdom and use a chance ranging themselves around the Arab initiative.”

Iranian supreme leader’s political adviser Ali Larijani expressed the hope that the LAS secretary-general “will successfully cope with his task.”

Meanwhile, head of the Christian opposition Michel Aoun and his ally, Secretary General of the Shiite Hezbollah movement Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah stated that they expect “Amr Moussa to specify all details of the Arab initiative.”

In the view of Aoun, “the road map” should be cemented by “clear-cut mutual obligations of political opponents.”

Then, he stressed, “A new president will appear in Lebanon on Saturday.”
The next voting on the candidature of General Suleiman is scheduled in the Lebanese parliament for January 12.

The struggle for power between the ruling parliamentary majority oriented towards the West and Saudi Arabia, and the anti-government alliance supported by Syria and Iran, has caused a severe constitutional crisis in Lebanon that is continuing for the second year.
