More British detectives join Bhutto’s murder probe

By IRNA

Islamabad : Another group of Scotland Yard investigators arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday to assist in the inquiry into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The 3-member team would join their seven colleagues who have been in Pakistan since January 4.

The British police are providing technical assistance to Pakistani investigators to hold inquiry into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, who was killed on December 27 after she addressed a big public meeting in the city of Rawalpindi.

President Pervez Musharraf said last week he is “not fully satisfied” with the investigation into the killing by the Pakistani police and had requested to the British Prime Minister to send Scotland Yard detectives.

Musharraf denied the government or intelligence agencies had tried to “hide secrets” after Bhutto’s murder.

Bhutto’s Peoples Party has called for a wider inquiry by the United Nations. The party now says it will send party delegations to lobby for UN inquiry.

The UN Secretary General said that Pakistan has not approached the UN for Bhutto’s murder probe.

The team from Scotland Yard has visited the scene of an injured police officer on duty as well as injured party activists.

They have also examined the bullet-proof car of Bhutto and body parts of the suicide bomber.

The UK detective called on President Pervez Musharraf yesterday and sought his support for their investigation process.

Official media quoted President Musharraf as assuring the British police that he wants to reach the bottom as to who were behind Bhutto’s assassination.

The Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema says there are no restrictions on the movement of the British police and that they can stay as long as they want.

There has been differing accounts of what caused Bhutto’s death.

An initial government report said she was killed when a bomb blast caused her head to hit the bullet-proof vehicle she was travelling in at the time.

That account has been rejected by Ms Bhutto’s supporters.

They say that Bhutto was hit by bullet fired by an assassin.

In October, Benazir Bhutto said her enemies in the government and intelligence agencies were plotting to kill her.

Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has criticized the government investigation as woefully inadequate.

PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the party would not back down from its demands for a UN investigation and that there should be no objection from the government.
