Bengal police seize opium worth Rs.10 mn

Kolkata : The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal police confiscated huge quantity of opium worth Rs.10 million from a village in Nadia district in an early morning raid Thursday.

“We raided a house in Panchkhela village in Nadia district (about 100 km from state capital Kolkata) and recovered the narcotics weighing 2.5 kg. The opium is of very high quality,” Sanjay Mukherjee, Deputy Inspector General, CID (Narcotics), told IANS.

“The estimated international value of the seizure is Rs.10 million,” he said.

Mukherjee said they have also seized some 300 kg of poppy straw from two houses in the same village in another raid. Two people were arrested.

Under the anti-narcotics laws of the country, the offenders can get up to 20 years imprisonment, he said.
