Cairo : The Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information has announced that the Arab strategy for communication and information technology for building the Information Society 2007-2015 will be among the issues brought to the economic council prior to referring it to the next summit in Kuwait.
This was stated in a press statement of the president of the Executive Office of the Minister of Communications Dr Tarek Kamel at the conclusion of a meeting of the 23rd session of the Council held here Thursday at the Arab League with the participation of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Algeria and Iraq.
He said that this strategy will be presented to the next meeting of the Arab Permanent Committee for Communications and Information in May 2008 in preparation for referring it to the next session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information Technology to be held in Jordan in June 2008.
He noted that the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information decided to hold its 24th round in Amman in the beginning of June.
Kamel revealed that Thursday’s meeting discussed a number of issues of joint Arab action in the field of communications and information technology particularly preparations to hold the Arab economic, social and development summit due to be held in Kuwait at the end of this year.
He added that the council also discussed the Arab preparations for the World Forum for the management of the Internet, pointing out that the council decided to integrate the Arab action team to prepare for the World Forum for the management of the Internet with a working group of domain names in Arabic on the Internet, in addition to naming the new team.
Kamel said the entire task of the new team is to study issues related to policy and management of the Internet and its resources and the Arab coordination in this regard, the use of the Arabic language in domain names on the Internet and to prepare for the Arab participation in the international forums.
The Council agreed during the meeting Thursday to postpone the study of the establishment of the Arab mail network pending the completion of the development work of the Council. It also approved a conceptual design for the selection of a unified Arab mail and on the occasion of the Arab Mail Day to be observed on Aug 3, 2008.
