London : The Iranian Embassy in London has reminded a leading British daily that Persian Gulf is authenticated internationally and not a mere colloquial name for the strategic waterway.
In an article on Monday, the Times newspaper explicitly suggested that the name of the waterway was only known in Iran as the Persian Gulf.
“The fact is that Iran is not the sole party which insists that this strategic waterway maintain its true identity,” the embassy said.
In a letter to the daily, it was advised that there were “numerous internationally accepted documents testifying” its historic name as well as British officials.
“No water channel has been so significant as the Persian Gulf to the geologists, archaeologists, geographers, politicians and scholars whether in past or present,” Britain’s former colonial commissioner of Iraq Sir Arnold Wilson was quoted saying in 1928.
“This water channel which separates the Iran Plateau from the Arabia Plateau has enjoyed an Iranian identity since at least 2,200 years ago,” Wilson wrote in his book, A Periplus of the Persian Gulf.
The Iranian embassy has regularly chastised attempts by both the British government and the media to deliberately or otherwise falsify the title of the Persian Gulf.
Last September, it rebuked the Sunday Telegraph for trying to call the waterway the “Arabian Gulf”, enclosing the specifications of four UN Editorial Directives regarding the use of the term Persian Gulf.
