Tamil newspaper office attacked in Chennai

Chennai : Activists of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Thursday attacked the office of the Tamil daily newspaper Dinamalar.

The party, formerly known as the Dalit Panthers of India, is a part of the DMK-led ruling coalition. The activists were apparently enraged over a news item published in the paper criticizing VCK chief T. Thirumavalavan.

VCK activists, armed with glass bottles and logs, entered the office premises of Dinamalar and attacked two watchmen on duty. The mob also damaged the windowpanes of the reception and an attendance-reading machine. As the second gate was closed, the office and staff inside were not harmed.

One of the guards suffered head injuries in the attack.

The newspaper has lodged a complaint with the police. Two VCK activists have been arrested, the police said.

This is the second time in the last one year that political activists have attacked a media office.

On May 9, 2007, supporters of M.K. Azhagiri, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, attacked Dinakaran newspaper’s office in Madurai. Three employees were burnt to death in that incident.
