Dalit village headman lynched

By IANS

Raipur : A Dalit headman of a village was beaten to death and his house set ablaze Friday, reportedly in an inter-caste clash.

Ten people were injured in the clash in Niwari village, 80 km north of the state capital here.

Tension gripped the village Thursday night when two groups of villagers clashed over organising a cultural event. The programme was finally conducted in the presence of policemen.

Fresh trouble erupted Friday morning when one faction opposed to the headman Bholaram started beating him up. After killing him, the mob also set his house on fire.

Director General of Chhattisgarh police Vishwa Ranjan told IANS that no arrests have been made so far but a few people have been detained.

“I can’t say whether the incident had anything to do with a caste conflict. I am waiting for a detailed report,” Ranjan said.
