Russia warns NATO against discrimination

By RIA Novosti

Moscow : Russia’s new envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin warned the 26-member alliance Friday that it cannot build its own security by ignoring other’s legitimate concers.

“They (NATO countries) should understand that no one’s security can be ensured to the detriment of others’ safety,” Rogozin told the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily.

President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Thursday appointing Rogozin, an outspoken nationalist and former lawmaker, as Russia’s permanent envoy to NATO.

The envoy said the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, Kosovo, Iran and Afghanistan would be his priority areas of work during his tenure at the NATO.

Moscow has temporarily suspended its obligations under the CFE saying the arms pact concluded during the Cold War era does not reflect the present geo-political realities of Europe or address Russian security concerns.

Rogozin said the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism would involve close cooperation with the Russian interior ministry and Federal Security Service.

He also pledged to integrate the Emergencies Ministry into a NATO-Russia emergencies reaction programme that is currently being developed.

He promised to turn his attention to the issue of patent infringement, citing the widespread abuse of the world-famous Russian “Kalashnikov” brand of automatic weapons as a particular problem.
