Washington : The US has said that political parties in Kenya should act reasonably and try to find a political solution to disputes between President Mwai Kibaki and the opposition parties.
“It’s important that all the political leaders in the country act responsibly. While we certainly respect and understand peoples’ needs to speak their minds and freely express their opinions, including through public demonstration, we certainly want to make sure that nothing is done to encourage violence or encourage any kind of non-peaceful actions,” State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Friday.
“We are still encouraging them to move forward to develop a political solution to the situation there,” Casey said.
Casey made the comments after Kenya’s opposition called Friday for a three-day mass protest across the country next week to protest Kibaki’s disputed re-election.
Over 500 people have been killed and 250,000 people have been internally displaced as a result of the violence in the country, triggered by the disputed presidential election result.
