Iraq keen on better relations with US, world – PM

Baghdad : Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki has said that his country was very keen on building better relations with the United States and the world.

“Iraq’s foreign policy goes in line with its national interests and the expectations of the Iraqi people. We are keen on building better relations with the US and the whole world,” he was quoted as saying in an official statement issued after his meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice here Tuesday.

According to the statement, he has said that they were working on restoring confidence with the international community and removing the effect caused by the policies of the defunct regime.

The statement said that the Iraqi government would focus on reviving the country’s economy and reconstruction over the coming period as well as improving the services offered to the Iraqi people following the improvement of security conditions.

Al-Maliki noted that his government was also working hard on boosting the bases of democracy, freedom, justice, the rule of law and disseminating a climate of national reconciliation.

For her part, Rice underscored the US support for efforts of the Iraqi government in realising security and stability in the country.
