Srinagar : A top guerrilla of the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed in a gunbattle with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday morning, police said.
A man suspected to be LeT district commander Abu Kital alias Hamza was shot dead by the security forces in north Kashmir’s Ajas village in Bandipora district, 40 km from here.
“Acting on specific information that the LeT district commander was hiding inside a house in Ajas village, the security forces surrounded the house and challenged the hiding militant to surrender, upon which he started firing on the troops,” a senior police officer said here.
“In the resulting encounter, Abu Kital alias Hamza, the district commander of LeT, was killed.”
Reports reaching here said the house in which the militant was hiding was destroyed in the shootout. Searches are, however, continuing in the area.
Troops of 30 Rashtriya Rifles, the special operations group of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force carried out the operation.
