Bhubaneswar : An alleged rape attempt on a woman lawyer in Orissa triggered violent protests here Tuesday during which a police vehicle was damaged.
The incident occurred Monday night when the lawyer after attending the court was returning home in a village, some 15 km from here.
A group of miscreants followed her and molested her and attempted to rape her, a senior district police official told IANS.
But the woman lawyer managed to escape, the official said.
In protest against the incident, lawyers Tuesday boycotted all courts here and took to the street, burnt tyres, blocked a road for hours and damaged a police vehicle. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
The protesting lawyers also demanded that the crime branch of the state police probe the incident, the official added.
