Nairobi : Kenyan police and riot troops attacked demonstrators protesting President Emilio Mwai Kibaki using tear gas in several cities of Nairobi, east Africa.
Those protests occurred after yesterday’s election of ODM (Orange Democratic Movement) opposition leader Kenneth Marende as Parliament president, 105 votes to 101.
This was the first legislative session since the December elections, which results were questioned by ODM, triggering persistent protests.
Some 600 people have died in street disputes since December 27. It is also calculated that another 250,000 have become displaced during confrontations between followers of Kibaki and opposition Raila Odinga.
In the current legislature, 99 of the 222 seats pertain to ODM and 43 to Kibaki’s NUP (National Unity Party).
Odinga’s followers called today for mass concentrations of people to begin a program of 48 protest meetings for the next three days, Kenya Daily reported.
