Dhaka : Former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia and her two sons, all in jail, will get a brief parole to pay last respects to Zia’s mother who died after a prolonged illness.

Taiyaba Majumdar, 87, died at her family home in Dinajpur in northern Bangladesh Friday night after a prolonged illness.

Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Brig. Gen. Zakir Hasan told The Daily Star at around 1.30 a.m. that as per Zia’s wishes her mother Taiyaba Majumdar’s body would be brought to her Dhaka cantonment residence by a helicopter.

The official said he had met Zia and asked her whether she would like to go to Dinajpur or the body be brought to Dhaka. She chose the second option.

The occasion would permit a family reunion, since her sons are in jail and Zia herself is lodged in a special prison in parliament complex.

Zia, who was arrested Sep 3 last year along with her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko on a graft charge, will be able to meet her both sons and other close relatives.

Tarique Rahman, the elder politician son, was arrested March 7 last year. The former prime minister ruled Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and 2001 to 2006.
