Berlin : Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will officiate at the upcoming International Security Conference of Munich, outgoing director of that meeting Horst Teltschik reported on Thursday.

The invitation to Erdogan to officiate at the opening ceremony of the 44th meeting of the Munich forum was attributed by Telschik to Turkey’s increasing role in the Near East problem.

The meeting favors top level debates of the main problems that affect world peace, and the coming edition will be held from February 8-10.

Teltschik confirmed attendance of Presidents Vladimir Voronin (Moldavia) and Branko Crvenkovski (Macedonia), 25 Defense ministers, and 15 foreign ministers.

He also confirmed attendance of Russian Assistant Prime Minister Serguei Ivanov, who is in charge of the defense industry, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and North Atlantic Treaty Organization General Secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director Mohamed El Baradei will also attend the meeting.

Iranian negotiator for nuclear affairs Ali Larijani attended the previous meeting.

Munich’s International Security Conference will debate NATO’s future, the situations in Asia, Russia and the Balkans, besides disarmament and the countries in conflict, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan, Teltschik said.
