Washington : The recent talks between Indian and Chinese leaders are “a model for governments in other parts of the world”, the Boston Globe has said in an editorial.
Commenting on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Beijing, the daily said that the coming together of the world’s two most populous nations would benefit “the whole of humanity”.
Manmohan Singh ended last week a three-day trip to China, where he held extensive talks with his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.
“These two rising Asian powers have their quarrels, including an unresolved border dispute, clashing political philosophies and suspicions about each other’s strategic intent.
“But precisely because their differences are serious, their dialogue is a model for governments in other parts of the world,” the Globe said.
Singh’s message in China, it went on, “was that for governments seeking to lift people out of poverty, international relations need not be a zero sum game”.
The editorial, however, warned that the people of India and China “will suffer if their governments fail to do their part in preventing calamitous climate change”.
