Chennai : Police in Tamil Nadu have arrested three more people for alleged links with Sri Lankan dissident outfit the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The three were arrested Sunday after a tip off by Thambidurai Parameswaran, a senior LTTE operative who was arrested last week, the police said. Parameswaran was referred to as the “Tamil Nadu intelligence chief” of the terrorist outfit.
One of those arrested Sunday included Selvaraj, 28, from Kumbakonam. According to the police Selvaraj has worked in Mumbai and had promised Parameswaran he would smuggle iron balls and similar material, apparently for making bombs.
The police arrested Selvaraj from the Chennai Central Railway Station when he arrived on a train from Mumbai.
Dileepan, 23, a refugee from Jaffna, was arrested at the Mottai Malai refugee camp near Virudhnagar in this state. He was also alleged to have the links with smugglers.
Muthukumar, an ex-service man from Salem was arrested on the Nagapattinam coast, allegedly in possession of four kg of opium, which the police said was worth Rs.1 crore (10 million).
Muthukumar was trying to smuggle the narcotics into northern Sri Lanka from India, the police said.
The arrests come after the Tamil Nadu police last week began searching for cadres of the LTTE across the state following reports that many have fled to India in view of stepped up action against the outfit in the neighbouring country.
