Srinagar : Security forces gunned down three separatist guerrillas in two gunfights in Kashmir Monday.

Troops of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and special operations group (SOG) of the state police laid a siege around Aliyalpora village, 80 km from here in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, the police said.

“As the troops were busy in searches, militants hiding in a house opened fire at the joint search parties of the 44 RR and the SOG, resulting in a fierce gunfight,” a senior police officer said here.

“Two militants have been killed,” the officer said while the operation was still on.

He said soldiers and militants were also engaged in an ongoing fierce gunfight in Mundgam village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, 70 km from here.

One militant was killed in the second gunfight, said the officer.

An army major was also reported injured in the exchange of fire.
