Amman : United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged it will spare no effort to back sustained regional and international initiatives for fighting crimes and entrenching justice.
“The UAE will continue its close cooperation with all international specialised organisations in this regard,” UAE Minister of Justice Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri said Tuesday while addressing a regional conference dedicated to discuss the UN anti-corruption convention in the Dead Sea resort of Jordan, WAM news agency reported.
He told the meeting, which is being hosted by the Jordanian ministry of justice in conjunction with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), that the UAE has already ratified the UN convention in 2006.
On UAE’s anti-corruption efforts, the minister said the UAE has drafted organisational and punitive legislations to ensure integrity and transparency in government performance.
“The UAE has introduced provisions on its penal code to criminalise corruption-related crimes and enacted laws to combat money laundering and human trafficking,” he said.
“Corruption is not a phenomenon in the UAE community, but we are determined in light of the current boom to devise adequate mechanism to fight it and punish corruptors in line with international standards,” the minister underlined.
The three-day regional conference on the UN Convention against Corruption started in Jordan Monday evening. The objective of the conference is to review the anti-corruption mechanisms in the Arab countries in light of the provisions of the convention.
The conference in Jordan is being held one week ahead of the conference of signatories of the UN Convention against Corruption due on Jan 28 in Bali, Indonesia.
