Guatemala City : Controversial Guatemalan columnist Hugo Arce, 56, has been found dead in a hotel room here, Spanish news agency EFE reported Thursday.
Prosecutor Alvaro Matus told the press that Arce apparently died Wednesday from a gunshot in the chest, “but at the moment, we don’t have more details”.
A spokesman for the national police said Wednesday the victim was alone when he checked into the Conquistador Rama hotel sometime after midnight Tuesday.
Jose Eduardo Zarco, founder of the magazine Y Que for which Arce used to write, told police the columnist was invited to write for the magazine “because one must be insolent in Guatemala, and he was”.
Last month, Sandra Torres de Colom, wife of President Alvaro Colom, said she was going to file defamation charges against Arce for statements he made about her.
Police are investigating the columnist’s death.
