Lima : Nine people have been killed after a bus in which they were travelling went off the road and fell into a ravine in northern Peru, Spanish news agency EFE reported Thursday.

The bus was plying on the route between Chiclayo and Querocoto towns, nearly 600 km north of capital Lima.

The authorities are trying to identify the victims, but the remoteness of the accident site and bad weather conditions have been impeding rescue operation, the police said.

On Jan 14, nine people were killed in a similar accident in Peru’s southeastern Cuzco region, and two days later, six people died and 34 were injured in three road accidents in other parts of the country.

On Jan 10, a packed bus was buried on a road due to a landslide. At least 35 people are still missing.

The devastating rain has been blamed on the climate condition known as La Niña.

It is a climatic condition opposite to what is known as El Niño and occurs when seawater temperature is more than 0.5 degrees Celsius lower than average. El Niño occurs when seawater temperature goes higher than average.
