Jamia’s move away from being a minority institution

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia established in 1920 for improving higher education among Muslims of India seems to be moving away from its mission. Only 11 percent Muslims find seats out of 500 seats for B.Ed (Distance Education) for the year 2007-08.

Jamia also failed to provide quota for internal students.

Jamia’s original mission of education of Muslims seems to be in jeopardy. Whether it is the ongoing tussle with National Commission for Minority Educational Institution (NCMEI) or the proportion of Muslim students admitted to Jamia or the demands of Jamia’s old boys and well-wishers for restoration of Jamia’s minority character, there is a perception that Jamia administration is not making any effort to preserve its original vision.

A case for restoration of minority character of JMI is being heard at NCMEI, an institution governed by Human Resource Development ministry.

Jamia has submitted in the High Court that it is a minority institution but Jamia VC Mushirul Hasan told NCMEI that Jamia is not a minority institution leading many to wonder the intention behind creating this contradiction.
