Shimla : A day after residents of Shimla experienced the coldest January in the last 15 years, the state capital continued to freeze as the minimum temperature fell to minus 3.5 degree Celsius Friday.

On Thursday, the mercury fell to minus 4.4 degres Celsius, the coldest for the month of January in the last 15 years.

Water has been freezing the pipes for almost a week due to the unusual cold spell.

Nearby resorts of Kufri and Narkhanda received snowfall.

Kalpa in Kinnaur district, some 250 km from here, experienced six inches of snowfall Friday.

Three helicopter flights to ferry in supplies and fly out sick people from the snow bound Lahaul valley had to be cancelled due to bad weather from Kullu Friday, a government spokesman said.

Much of the tribal belt of Lahaul, Spiti, Kinnaur, Bharmaur and Dodra Kwar are cut of from the rest of the world due to heavy snow.

Many villages in the tribal belt continue to be without power due to snapping of power poles and cables due to heavy snowfall.
