Sri Lanka air force pounds rebel territory

Colombo, Jan 25 (Xinhua) The Sri Lanka air force continued to bomb Tamil rebel positions in the island’s embattled north, defence officials said Friday.

The air force fighter jets had bombed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) transport facility two kilometres southwest of the northern Kilinochchi town at around 7.30 a.m. local time.

The government continues its bombardment of rebel positions in the northern Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi districts.

On Wednesday in one of the air raids the government defence sources believed the LTTE’s reclusive leader Velupillai Prabakaran had been hit. The rebels later denied the claim.

In one such air raid early November last year, the LTTE’s political wing head was killed.

The government has vowed to end rebel resistance this year after it unilaterally abrogated the six-year-old Norwegian backed ceasefire Jan 16.

More than 70,000 people have died in the conflict since the mid-1980s.

The government Thursday said that a political devolution plan would be on offer to the minority Tamils by way of a report submitted by an all-political party representatives’ panel that had come out with a formula for resolution of the conflict.
