India’s 59th Republic Day celebrated in London

London : Indian high commissioner to Britain Kamalesh Sharma Saturday unfurled the tricolour here on the occasion of the 59th Republic Day of the country.

Delivering his last speech as the high commissioner – Sharma takes over as the Commonwealth secretary general soon – he highlighted the progress India-British relations had made in the past three years.

Sharma noted that India had emerged as the second largest investor in Britain; more than hundred flights a week now operate between Britain and India; more than 60 Indian companies trade in the London Stock Exchange; approximately half a million tourists visit Britain, and Indians are the second highest spenders in this country, next to the US.

Union minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora who is on an official visit to Britain was also present on the occasion.
