Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands) : World champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Loek van Wely of the Netherlands split points in the 12th and penultimate round here Sunday as the Corus International Chess headed for a close finish.
Grandmasters (GMs) Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Levon Aronian Armenia lead Group A with 7.5 points while world No. 2 Anand and Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan are placed second with seven.
Carlsen came into the reckoning for the title with a win over Russian Vladimir Kramnik, a former world champion and reigning world No. 1.
In Group C, GM Parimarjan Negi of India beat Efstratios Grivas of Greece to be placed second with eight points. Negi will now play tournament leader Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the final round and a win will help him finish joint first.
In Group B, GM P. Harirkishna of India played out a draw with Polish GM Michal Krasenkow. GM Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia defeated Erwin L’Ami of the Netherlands and is virtually assured of the top position as he now has nine points – one more than Nigel Short of England and Etienne Bacrot of France.
