Madrid : A man who helped Spanish security forces dismantle a suspected terror cell in Barcelona has admitted he was a suicide bomber of the group preparing attacks in Barcelona and other European cities, EFE news agency reported Sunday.
Tipped off by the terrorist-turned-informer, the Spanish police Jan 19 arrested 14 suspected members of an Islamist terrorist outfit. According to Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, 12 of those held were Pakistani nationals while two were Indians.
According to the man, the attacks were to be carried out by pairs of suicide bombers who would carry the explosive device in a backpack, which would be detonated by “a third person from a distance.”
The testimony of the protected witness published in the El Pais daily Saturday gave details of his arrival in Barcelona and his meeting with the other members of the alleged jihadi cell, as well as a conversation with a supposed explosives expert trained in Pakistan.
According to him, one of the chosen targets of their attacks was the Barcelona metro, used by thousands of people every day.
He also spoke about of how Taliban terrorist Baitula Mehsud , who was blamed for killing former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto last December, had planned to carry out attacks in Spain, and then in Germany, France, Potugal and Britain.
